Oxford superintendent to retire in June

Oxford will soon be in the market for a new superintendent of schools.
In a Feb. 8 letter of resignation to school board President Colleen Schultz, Superintendent Virginia Brennan-Kyro announced her decision to retire effective June 30.
“After much thought and consideration, I have decided to retire from public education after 34 years of service,” Brennan-Kyro wrote.
She’s served as Oxford’s superintendent since July 2000.
“The past seven years, although challenging at times, have clearly been the most rewarding and satisfying of my career,” Brennan-Kyro wrote.
“I’m happy for her,” said Schultz. “She’s done a great job. She’s worked very hard.”
When asked if the announcement was a surprise, Schultz replied, “It was to me. She called me this morning (Feb. 8).”
“I’ve known that she’s been eligible to retire for a while based on her years of service, but she’s never really given any inkling,” Schultz said. “We’ll miss her, but I’m glad for her. She served the people and the kids of Oxford well.”
The school board is expected to accept Brennan-Kyro’s letter of resignation at the Tuesday, Feb. 13 meeting.
Exactly how the board plans to go about conducting the search for Brennan-Kyro’s replacement must also be discussed at some point.
“We’ve got figure out what we’re gonna do,” Schultz said.
Fortunately, time is not an issue right now.
“We have lots of time,” Schultz said. “She told us in February, so how lucky for us. She didn’t give us six weeks notice or two weeks.”
This reporter was unable to reach Brennan-Kyro for further comment.
