Oxford woman donates 14-inch ponytail to Locks of Love

The fifth annual benefit sponsored by Rumourz Hair Salon in Lake Orion for the Locks of Love was held on Sunday, February 11, 2007.
Many donors found their way to Rumourz Hair Salon through the Locks of Love website, flyers displayed at many schools and message boards throughout the area.
The benefit raised the funds needed along with the 19 ponytails donated to make hair prosthetics. It takes 10 to 14 ponytails to make one quality hair prosthetic for disadvantaged children with medical hair loss.
Most of the Locks of Love recipients have lost their hair due to a medical condition known as alopecia areata, which has no known cause or cure. These prostheses help to restore their self-esteem and self-confidence, which enables them to face the world and their peers.
Many children and adults donated their prized possession, their hair, to help make a difference for other children. The longest ponytail measured 14 inches and was donated by Elizabeth Dumas, of Oxford. She won a basket with gift certificates donated by Sub-way of Lake Orion, Mannie’s Bagel & Delicatessen, Lake Orion Health Foods & Rumourz Hair Salon (all merchants are in the Lakeview Plaza shopping strip) along with a lovable teddy bear.
A total of 180 1/2 inches of hair was donated. Several children donated two years ago and grew their hair again to donate again this year. Many in the community knows that this is an annual event and one woman made this her third donation in the five year history of this benefit at Rumourz Hair Salon.
The staff at Rumourz Hair Salon consisting of hairstylists and support staff gave of their time and talents to make this fifth annual Rumourz Hair Salon benefit a success for Locks of Love.
Next year’s Locks of Love benefit at Rumourz Hair Salon will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2008. Start growing your hair now!
