Atlas Twp.-On Saturday, members of the Genesee Daughters of the American Revolution, along with Sons of the American Revolution, gathered at the Horton Cemetery to honor patriots John and William Britton.
‘There are 12 Revolutionary War Patriots buried in Genesee County,? said Carol Powers, DAR chaplain and regent. ‘We have three buried in the township.?
John Britton was born on Long Island, N.Y., and first served as a private in the New Jersey continental line, which included some action in the Canadian campaign during the Revolutionary War. He later joined the Second Regiment of the Somerset County militia in New Jersey, still as a private. He married Lydia Pitts Harris following the death of his first wife, Isabel Rice, in 1809. Rice had at least six children with Britton. During his lifetime, Britton lived in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and various parts of New York before moving to the township nearer his son. Britton farmed in the township before his death on May 20,1846.
Information regarding William Britton is still unknown.
