Pontiac boy rescued from Voorheis Lake

A 12-year-old Pontiac boy was dragged out of Voorheis Lake by a Mercury Drive resident after a day of swimming at Keatington Beach nearly took a deadly turn on July 22.
The boy’s sister told an Oakland County Sheriff’s Department deputy that she and her brother were at the beach with a church group for a day of swimming. According to the OCSD deputy’s report, the girl told him neither she nor her brother were very good swimmers.
The deputy noted that the boy was being pulled from the water as the emergency call was being dispatched. The Orion Township Fire Department Rescue Unit arrived and said the boy had a pulse and was breathing, but was going in and out of consciousness.
According to the sister, her brother was getting tired and started pulling on her. She screamed and a 22-year-old Mercury Drive man who was an eye witness ran into the water and pulled the boy out of the lake.
The man told the OCSD that the boy was only under water a minute or so. The boy was able to speak with the deputy, and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital via ambulance for further observation.
