Raymond Gerald Harris of Ortonville crossed his last finish line on May 30, 2017. Ray and his identical twin brother, Ron, were born in Lansing, Mich. on their great-aunt’s kitchen table to Ronald “Rondie” P. Harris and Martha F. (Remus) Harris. Born into an auto racing family, the brothers spent their younger years working at the family gas station and racing open-wheel, dirt track, midget racers and sprint cars along with their father. After graduating from Lansing Technical High School in 1944, Ray entered the Army and served in WWII from 1944-1946. He was assigned to the tank command and was deployed to Italy and North Africa. Upon his return, Ray worked at Wolverine Chevrolet in Lansing for five years until 1950, when he married the love of his life, Dolores Jean “Trudy” (Post) Harris. Ray and Trudy were married for 61 years until her death in 2012. In 1951 he began his career at Consumers Power Company (now: CMS Energy) where he began as an auto/truck mechanic and rose to the rank of regional auto and equipment Services Superintendent 34 years later. Ray retired in 1985. Upon retirement, Ray and his brother returned to the racing circuit, racing antique midget and sprint cars through the Antique Auto Racing Association (AARA). Ray was a member of the Brandon School Board of Education from 1964-1974, past-president of the Ortonville Rotary, active in the Ortonville United Methodist Church, Junior Achievement, and holds a life time membership in the Lansing VFW Post 701. Throughout his lifetime, Ray donated over 23 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross. Ray was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores (“Trudy”) Harris and his twin brother, Ronald D. Harris. Ray leaves behind one daughter, Raeanne (Richard) Frazer and his beloved grandson Ryan Eric Frazer as well as “special adopted” daughter, Betty (William) Hewitt. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 5, 2017 at Ortonville United Methodist Church, 93 Church St., Ortonville. Interment will follow at Ortonville Cemetery. Family will receive friends on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Village Funeral Home, 135 South St., Ortonville and after 9 a.m. Monday at the church.
