Goodrich – A new karate studio has opened in town with one of Michigan’s foremost karate instructors.
Hayme Serrato has been teaching karate for over 30 years and has earned his 6th degree blackbelt. He will teach all of the martial arts at Four Seasons Karate, 8217 State Road.
Serrato is 100 percent Apache. He said the karate studio got the name Four Seasons because fall, winter, spring and summer reflect the different seasons of the circle of life.
The classes he will offer include: Tang Soo Do, Brazilian Ju Jitsu, Mixed Martial Arts, Thai Chi, Yoga and Kickboxing.
‘Tai Chi and Yoga strengthen the inner body and teaches how to control breathing. That helps people learn how to control themselves,? said Serrato. ‘Karate strengthens the outer body.?
Serrato said all of the martial arts teach deep breathing, which helps to relieve stress. ‘The martial arts builds confidence. Everyone feels better after a workout and people feel better about themselves.?
There is no time to daydream in his classes. ‘When students come in for their martial arts class, they have to focus on what they are doing so they can’t think about anything else,? he said.
One of his students, Laura Hadley, said, ‘When I first started I couldn’t even do a push-up or a sit-up. It took only six months and then I started feeling a sense of empowerment. Now I know I can take care of myself if I need to and this has been a great outlet for stress.?
Hadley said her two children Alex, 12, and Ben, 13, have developed a close relationship with Serrato. ‘Hayme is so patient and kind with children. He respects everyone and makes all of his students feel comfortable.? Details: (810) 636-8000.
