Leonard Elementary third-graders recently rocked their school by playing instruments they made ? and in some cases, invented.
It was all part of their science unit on light and sound. The students had to create an instrument using at least three different types of materials that would play different pitches and involve vibrations.
‘It was great because they used their own imaginations to create these instruments,? said teacher Shannon Huhta.
The most interesting instrument was called ‘The Gazing Ball,? created by third-grader Vivian Woudstra. The instrument consisted of ‘some string, bells, bungee cords, rubber bands, a Frankenstein cup full of marbles, a cell phone, a dog choker chain, a bow, some bracelets, a watch band, bubble wrap, tape, beads, sea shells, a balloon, a slinky, a chopstick, and of course, a gazing ball stand with butterflies.?
‘I hope someday this will become a real instrument that people play in bands or orchestras,? Woudstra wrote. ? CJC
