Schools doing their part for hurricane relief

Kids at Carpenter Elementary School are ‘Change? ing Lives by Giving, while students at Lake Orion High School have already raised $1,500, on their way to a goal of $4,000, all for the cause of relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Every school in the Lake Orion district is pitching in to help, donating to the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
The student council at Carpenter Elementary organized a coin drive to benefit the Red Cross, and collected over $500 in just the first two days.
They placed a coin canister in the front hall of Carpenter, where students, faculty and parents could drop off donations.
Each day of the drive, which was Sept. 12-19, the student council members used their lunch hours to count the money.
At LOHS, the Leadership Council, Key Club and National Honor Society are holding a dollar drive, and have raised almost half of their $4,000 goal already.
The Leadership Council is looking for local businesses to match the students? donations.
The other schools of Lake Orion are also doing their part:
l Blanche Sims Elementary students plan to donate 5 percent of their annual Fun Run fundraiser profits (to be held Sept. 30) for hurricane relief.
l Orion Oaks Elementary students are donating money to the Red Cross, and the school’s fifth grade Leadership Council is conducting a dollar drive. The school is also donating 10 percent of their Fun Run money.
l Paint Creek Elementary’s PTO is holding a bake sale, and teachers there are donating their Friday Jeans Day donations.
Students will be doing a ‘Dimes for Disaster? coin drive for the Red Cross.
l Pine Tree Elementary students are donating via cash or check to the Salvation Army.
l Stadium Drive Elementary students are collecting donations for the Red Cross.
l Oakview Middle School students are holding a coin and card drive, with cash donations to be matched by Marshall Fields.
l Scripps Middle School will collect cash for the Red Cross, and donate money for Hat Day on Fridays.
The student council is also selling bracelets.
l Waldon Middle School is selling ‘Red Crosses? for a donation; the donator’s name will be printed on a cross, which will be displayed on a wall at the school.
l The CERC student council is collecting cash donations for the Salvation Army.
