Second Thoughts Resale Shoppe open for business

The exterior of Second Thoughts Resale Shoppe, 1888 Ortonville Road, is attracting the attention of passersby on M-15.
The building is deep purple in color, but the interior of the business is causing double takes, too, say owners Anne Wesol and Joann Smith, both of Clarkston.
‘People are so nice and positive in this community,? said Smith. ‘They say this (a resale store) is what they needed here.?
Smith and Wesol, friends and first-time business owners, opened Second Thoughts on June 5. Both enjoy decorating and believe a resale shop will be a benefit to the area in a difficult economy.
Second Thoughts features gently used, high quality, unique home decor, furnishings and more. The 1,000 square-foot store has approximately 500 artfully displayed items for sale, including dining tables and chairs, artwork, mirrors, frames, dishes, purses, jewelry and more.
‘They have an amazing eye for picking unique and different items to carry,? said Karen Fenske, who refinishes furniture pieces for Second Thoughts.
The store also offers antiques, but Wesol clarifies that they are not antique dealers and do not appraise items.
Second Thoughts takes items on consignment, by appointment only.
‘We are selective on what we consider,? Wesol said. ‘We buy outright some items that need work. For consignment, we take them only in excellent condition. We are interested in some handcrafted items.?
‘We try to put things in the store that we would like to have in our own home,? said Barb Hoeksema, who works at the business during the week and is Wesol’s mom. ‘Most people have fun with it and like that there is always something new.?
The arrangement of the pieces changes nearly daily, but the store maintains an uncluttered look. In one corner is a breakfast nook table, with four bar stool chairs in different colors, with backs featuring steaming coffee mugs. A matching sofa and chair are nearby and three varied dining sets are placed around the room. Artwork of all kinds adorns the walls. Accessories such as a pair of gold-tone candlesticks and an eclectic giraffe lamp sit atop a desk and tables.
‘There are always good treasures to notice,? Fenske said.
‘Surprises are coming,? Wesol added. ‘We are always changing.?
