Sign ordinance

Ortonville- Some local businesses reprimanded for violations of a village sign ordinance will receive a reprieve.
The village council agreed to a 90-day grace period for 10 businesses whom they had recently sent letters to requesting removal of offending signs that vary in size from small sandwich boards to large banners. The move came after a request during the July 23 council meeting by one of the business owners in question.
The grace period, says Village Manager Ed Coy, will allow the council and business owners to work out an understanding or compromise. However, there will be no grace period for violations which are safety-related and block the view of drivers.
‘We understand the need (by business owners) for advertising, but a few people allowed signage to get out of hand,? Coy said. ‘Hopefully we can come up with a reasonable compromise. A rewritten sign ordinance is a possibility.?
