‘Since when did we move to Detroit? I don’t remember going there?

Dear editor:
I received my summer tax papers the other day. Of course, it was about what I expected, but one thing I did notice was the P.O. Box address that people are supposed to send their payments to: Detroit. Since when did we move to Detroit? I don’t remember going there. I called the office to ask why, and all I got was a very rude, ‘That’s the way it’s done.? I’m sorry, but that answer is not good enough for me. I thought the money we pay in taxes was going to help our community, not give someone in Detroit a paycheck. Is there a problem with the financial institutions in our community that they will not do business with us?
Another question I would like answered is, why do we make checks payable to the treasurer herself and not the township? I know it can be done that way legally, but is it ethical? I have talked with other townships, who all have checks made payable to the township and not to one person in particular.
As I was told, ‘That way everything is above board and no one can cry foul.?
