Skeet team shoots, hits silver

The Goodrich Varsity Skeet team took their shot at a silver medal last Saturday during their state competition.
The Michigan Scholastic Clay Target Program 2008 State Championship was held at the Detroit Gun Club in Walled Lake.
Coach Darrell King said Goodrich had 14 shooters in the competition. The varsity squad took second place.
Goodrich’s top varsity shooters were Chris Droste, with a score of 90 out of 100, Alex King, scoring 91, and Jordan Sontag, scoring 97.
‘Sontag tied three other competitors for the State Championship Buckle, but fell in the shoot-off,? King said.
Goodrich’s junior varsity squad took third place in the competition, with Lyle Lucas, Devon Stonerock and Evan Grzecki leading the team.
The Intermediate Entry Level team took second place in their competition. Anthony Frescura, Jessica Hollingshead and Grant Simcox were the lead shooters on the squad.
Goodrich’s skeet program starting shooting in Februrary.
‘We started out with 44 shooters, but as the weather got nicer we were losing them to other sports,? King said.
The shooters who remained with the team were rewarded at the championship and celebrated their success at a team picnic on Tuesday night.
The Scholastic Clay Target Program is intended for shooters in grades 12 and under. The program is designed to instill safe firearms handling in participants, according to the official website, www.nssf.org.
