An 18-year-old Oxford man who drove off the road last weekend, rolling his vehicle over while using a popular social media app on his phone, is expected to recover.
According to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Office report, the man was driving eastbound in the 5200 block of Oakwood Road near Hurd Road, when he took his eyes off the road while looking at Snapchat on his cell phone. He lost control of his vehicle and ran off the north side of the road, striking trees, grass and rocks before overturning the 2000 GMC Jimmy he was driving. He was issued a citation for failure to use due care and caution and was transported to William Beaumont Hospital in Troy for medical treatment.
‘Texting or any use of your cell phone while driving is a hazard and this is how accidents happen, with people? either you, or innocent people? getting seriously injured or dying,? said OCSO Sgt. Greg Glover, Brandon substation commander. ‘This could have easily been fatal.?
Glover added that many municipalities have ordinances banning cell phone use while driving, though there is not one in place in the township.
