A 40-year-old Highland man and his six-year-old son out riding their snowmobile on Lake Orion got a surprise on the evening of March 5 when they suddenly found themselves battling flames.
According to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Department report, the Orion Township Fire Department was dispatched to the area of Lake Orion between Bellevue and King Circle for a snowmobile on fire. The Highland man said he had just filled the snowmobile up with gas so he and his son could ride it on the lake when it stalled.
According to the report, the man opened the hood and said he saw flames. He tried to put the fire out with snow, but the flames spread too fast and the fire department was called.
The man said he had no insurance on the machine, and was advised he would be responsible for moving it off the ice.
