Softball team racks up wins

It has been a busy week for the Oxford varsity softball team. OHS swept the Berkley Bears on May 21, and finished with a strong second place showing at the Clio Mustang Invite May 19 after dropping two against visiting Clarkston May 16.
At the Clio Invitational, Oxford began with a victory over North Branch 5-1. Senior captain Cassie Edgemon stood out with two hits, a run, and two RBIs in the victory, while Junior Brooke Harris was awarded the win.
In the Clio closer, Oxford defeated Bay City Central 10-5. After struggling to get hits all day, Oxford tied the game in their last at bat to force extra innings. OHS jumped on the extra chance, driving in six runs in the top of the eighth off of four bunts and a surprise screaming liner from Junior Autumn Cervantez.
On the following Monday, OHS made short work of the visiting Berkely Bears, 7-4 and 18-2. Brooke Harris got another win on eight hits, four earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts.
On May 16, and just after coming off a triumphant victory at the Jill Milosch tournament, OHS fell to visiting Clarkston Wednesday May 16. OHS lost the first game 5-0 and then the second 12-1. Though OHS ‘held them defensively,? Wildcat Coach McDevitt said, Clarkston is ‘a very good team.? They have a particularly good pitching staff, McDevitt conceded.
Nevertheless, McDevitt considered the showing to be ‘out of character? for her gals. Though ‘our record is currently 12-19, . . . (it) does not reflect how good we are,? McDevitt said. ‘We have the power in the box, we have the tenacious (defense) on the field, and we have the pitching. It is all coming together and districts are right around the corner.?
McDevitt was optimistic about the Wildcat chances going forward and expects a return to form in the confidence builders coming up against Rochester Adams on May 23 and a four-team tourney that begins May 26.
