St. Joseph School has been selected as the recipient of the CYO Joseph P. Hourihan Community Service Award for 2007.
This award recognizes a neighborhood, school, church or community organization working in partnership with CYO, addressing issues affecting the quality of life for youth in the Archdiocese of Detroit. Doris Pope-Moore, a CYO staff member, nominated St. Joseph School for this award, and the CYO Volunteer Awards Task Force approved the selection.
According to Sister Theresa Darga, while introducing the school during the awards ceremony, the speaker said, ‘St. Joseph School has totally embraced the idea of teaching students to be leaders through service projects aimed at making a difference in our world through peace and justice.?
According to Darga, this award is a great testimonial to living out the school’s Mission Statement, which reads:
St. Joseph School is a Catholic community that is guided in faith, strengthened by prayer and committed to academic excellence.
We follow the example of Christ and carry our Christian values into our living and learning environment.
We grow in faith through participation in prayer services, liturgies and sacramental programs.
We reach out to others in need through service projects that affect our school, the church and our world.
We build our curriculum on current educational methodology, providing the materials and resources to support it.
We participate in school, local, archdiocesan, and national competitions to offer our students additional academic and athletic challenges.
