STARS

Brandon Twp.- Parents can help their children become star readers by registering their students in the STARS tutorial program.
Registration is now underway for the spring session of the program offered by Brandon Groveland Youth Assistance. The after-school program is open to all students in second through sixth grades in the district and will be from 4:05 p.m.-4:50 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Feb. 15 in Room 31 at Oakwood Elementary, 2839 Oakwood Road. The program runs through March 31, with no class March 1. Cost is $25.
Amy Lamiman, an Oakwood special education teacher, will lead the sessions which are typically attended by 10-15 students. She will be assisted by a parapro and several volunteers as they use a reading program called Read Naturally to improve students? fluency and reading comprehension.
One-on-one and independent reading occurs at every session.
‘The purpose is to get them reading more, exposing them to more text and increasing their sight words,? Lamiman said. ‘We chart their growth every session and you can see the increase in fluency and comprehension.?
A snack is provided at every session. Sign up with your child’s school secretary. For more information or to request financial assistance, contact BGYA at 248-627-1872.
