The Oxford Township parks and recreation department officially closed the Stony Lake boat launch on July 14 due to receding water levels.
According to Director Ron Davis, the shoreline on Stoney Lake has receded at least 20 feet since the first of May. This low water level has exposed the cement slabs used for climbing into boats. In order to place a boat into the water, users would now have to drive out onto the cement slabs, possibly causing damage to their boat, the hauler or their vehicle.
“We have had some individuals damage their boats by doing this already,” said Davis.
He added that he is not certain where the water is going, and the launch will only reopen if either the water level goes back up or the department can find the funds to fix the launch.
“Right now with our financial situation, the second option doesn’t look feasible,” Davis stated.
