Oakland County Sheriffs were called to Oxford High School Wednesday, April 6 at 10:45 a.m. to investigate a posssible gun sighting in the student parking lot.
Two witnesses, a father and his step-daughter, were driving southbound on N. Oxford road when the step-daughter observed two students standing in the parking lot. She said one of the students, wearing a red shirt, appeared to be holding a shotgun and was pointing it at the other student.
The father immediately called the high school to report the incident and returned to the scene only to find no one there.
Sheriff’s units searched the school premises and viewed security tapes. The tapes showed three students in the area of the incident, but none of them were wearing a red shirt and none of them were holding a weapon.
To make sure all students were safe from potential danger, the high school underwent an official lockdown for about an hour.
According to Oxford Superintendent Virginia Brennan-Kyro, Oakland Technical Center students from the high school were leaving at the same time the incident occured.
‘It seemed logical to speak to those students,? she said.
Brennan-Kyro said OHS Assistant Principal Ken Weaver and Assistant Superintendent Ronald Franey went to an OTECH campus with a roster to interview the students and determined which one had the BB gun.
According to Detective Ken Alderman, the suspect, who is a senior at the high schol, did have a gun. A BB gun, that is.
‘He did shoot the gun,? he said. ‘It ricocheted off the ground and hit the friend’s car.?
Alderman said the student’s friend isn’t pressing any charges.
The student in question was suspended as of April 6 pending the outcome of a school investigation, according to Brennan-Kyro.
Disciplinary action toward the student will be taken in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Punishment can range from suspension to expulsion, Brennan-Kyro said.
Oxford High School Principal Mike Schweig is expected to make a recommendation regarding the student’s punishment to the superintendent who will then pass it on to the school board for a decision.
