‘Superintendent should serve at the leisure of the board?

To the editor:
Throughout the recent uproar over Brandon Schools? superintendent, it has been repeatedly reported that Mr. Miller’s contract was up for renewal this month. A report indicates that Mr. Miller is in the first year of a three-year contract. If this is the case, and if it is also the case that Mr. Miller is currently seeking an extension of his current contract, then I would strongly encourage the board of education to: 1) not agree to any extension of the contract, and 2) avoid such foolish contracts in the future.
Regardless of the merits of any current or future allegations against Mr. Miller, the superintendent should serve at the leisure of the board, who are elected by the residents of the district. Multi-year contracts for top executives are bad corporate governance, and even worse in the public sector.
