Supporters work hard to help seniors

Dear Editor:
Over the past few weeks we have read so many wonderful letters telling us all about the great need for a new Senior Center here in Independence Township. We have heard all about the deplorable conditions at the center, the lack of handicap facilities, the leaky basement and the benefit to the Parks and Rec budget this millage would provide.
We know where the new center will be (next to the library). We know that Clarkston Schools donated the land (provided it is used for a new senior center). We know that many non-seniors will use the new facility (as they now use the old one). All of these facts are important, and I think everyone has done a great job getting them out there. I would like to tell a different story. I want to tell you about the special people behind this movement.
Every Monday night, a dedicated group of people meets at The Carriage House with one goal in mind, to get those two yes votes on Nov. 7. These meetings are important, but not as important as the incredible work that is done between meetings. First, I must recognize the work being done by the non-senior members of this movement. These are hard working folks who volunteer their time in an effort to make their township a little better. They raise funds, talk to various organizations, write letters and even do TV spots (look for the story this week on channels 10 and 20), all for the sake of our town, and for what they think is right.
Then there are the seniors. They are amazing to me. They serve as a reminder that the older members of this township are a great part of the fabric of our community. They seem to be everywhere, making copies, handing out thousands of fliers, setting up presentations, fund-raising, attending township board meetings and community events (en masse in their trademark yellow t-shirts). There is excitement in the air in our senior community and I feel privileged to be a part of it in my own small way.
Who am I? I am a behind the scenes helper. My husband, David, is very involved in this project and so am I. I am the distributor of T-shirts, the editor of letters, the answering service, the official baker of refreshments. Most importantly, I am a voter. I hope you will join me in voting yes twice on Nov. 7. Thank You.
