Before the school year began Team RUSH students gathered school supplies and filled them in brand new backpacks for one of the local Clarkston elementaries for the Back to School program, Aug. 28.
Within an hour and a half they had 85 children show up for the supplies. RUSH left another 30 backpacks at the elementary school for those who could not attend.
“One student gave me a high five after I gave him his school supplies,” said Cameron Razdar. “Then, when I looked at him his eyes were lit up with excitement. This response was so unexpected for me to see. It happened with almost every student. Seeing the smiles on these kids’ faces as we gave them their school supplies made the time well worth it.”
“It was heartwarming to see how thankful the children and parents were,” added Sejal Mehta. “I loved seeing the kids’ eyes light up as they picked up their new backpack and supplies.”
Even Team RUSH parents were overwhelmed by the experience by having parents of the elementary students thank them.
“The back to school supply program was very rewarding,” said parent Diana Hopper. “A parent thanked us for helping remove her stress of getting supplies. As a parent, I completely understand how challenging it can be to prepare your students for school.”
Kyle Hughes, a teacher with Team RUSH, added it was an unbelievable response.
“The children were very kind and very appreciative. We left feeling a bit choked up, knowing that we made a difference in many young peoples lives, and those kids now are excited for school to begin,” she said. “We love school. The RUSH kids love learning. This is a great event for them especially to inspire other young kids to get excited about school too. It was a very special time for the RUSH kids.”
