Sashabaw Middle School’s Destination Imagination team put their creative ideas and ability to think on the spot to the test, Feb. 26, tying for first place in regional competition.
This is the second year the team, Caroline Dargay, Anne-Marie Dargay, Kalei McLennan, Mitchell Page, Alex Pouttu, and Andrew Ross, placed first.? Last year they made it to the Global Finals Tournament in Knoxville, Tenn.
They competed against six other teams in an improvisational challenge titled, ‘Mythology Mission.? From October to February, they researched 12 countries, their cultures and a different mythological creature associated with each country.?
At the competition, they had five minutes to create an improvisational skit about a mission involving one of the mythical creatures.?
During their skit, they had to include three souvenirs that reflected the country. The souvenirs had to be fashioned out of randomly selected household items such as yarn, a metal pan, or socks.
Each team also encountered an ‘unexpected problem? while performing their skit,’solved through improvisation.
One last task was to combine the three individual souvenirs into one master prop.
The skits called for understanding cultures, mythology, improvisational acting, story development, theater arts and team work.
Team managers are parents Ruth Dargay and Dawn McLennan.
They head to the state Destination ImagiNation competition on April 16 in Holt, Mich.
