Teens and Seniors Rocking & Raking

Scouts, teen youth groups and adults looking to serve the community are invited to join others on April 27 for the annual spring Teens and Seniors Rocking and Raking yard clean-up project.
Any senior citizen 62 years plus or disabled adult can request yard clean-up, minor chores, and windows washed by notifying Annette at the Edna Burton Senior Center by April 12. Call 248-627-6447.
There is no charge to the homeowner. The project allows local young people, with adult supervision, satisfaction by serving others in their community.
The Teens and Seniors Rocking & Raking project is funded totally through sponsorship fees and donations. Volunteers are treated to a luncheon donated from people in the community.
For a minimum $200 donation your company name will be printed on the back of the volunteer T-shirts. Make checks payable to: Brandon Township, Clerk’s Office and mail to P.O. Box 929, Ortonville, MI 48462-0929.
The Brandon Township clerk’s office can be contacted at 248-627-2851 for volunteer applications and sponsor forms or to donate supplies, money, water and/or food. Every donation is greatly needed in order to serve more senior citizens this year.

The program has a new name, but the intent remains the same.
Volunteers will be out in force again this year to clean yards and do minor home improvement projects for area senior citizens and disabled adults.
The annual spring yard cleanup effort, now known as ‘Teens & Seniors, Rocking & Raking,? is set to begin at 9 a.m., May 2.
‘This is the same spring yard cleanup we’ve had, under a new name because we needed new sponsors,? says Brandon Township Clerk Jeannie McCreery, who began the annual event about six years ago, in conjunction with the home repair program ‘Rebuilding Together.?
‘All these young people came out to volunteer and the people working on the houses didn’t know what to do with the kids and so we had them clean yards. It grew every year, with more kids and more yards.?
‘Rebuilding Together? is now defunct in the township because of a lack of sponsorship, but volunteers in the ‘Rocking & Raking? program do more than just yard cleanup and raking of debris. They can wash windows on lower levels, trim trees with hand tools, bring out lawn furniture from storage and wash items, clean gutters, and do light painting.
The spring yard cleanup had about 123 volunteers last year and McCreery expects about 200 volunteers this year, not all of whom are teenagers, either. She recently received a call from an 82-year-old woman who wants to help by weeding flowerbeds.
‘If we have extra volunteers, we need more yards,? said McCreery. ‘Seniors don’t want to bother people, but they are giving a gift to these kids.?
Besides volunteers and yards to be cleaned, supplies and sponsors are also needed. Paper leaf bags are always in short supply, and McCreery needs paper products, brownies, cookies, chips, bottled water and more in order to feed up to 200 volunteers. She is grateful to sponsors that have already stepped forward to assist, including Edna Burton Senior Center under the clerk’s office, Frosty Boy of Ortonville, Bory, Inc. Landscaping, Tool Sport & Sign Co., and Brandon Chiropractic.
