Thompson back in familiar role as coach of Brandon boys? golf

Wayne Thompson is going ‘back to the future? this year as the new coach for the Brandon varsity boys golf team.
Thompson, in his 23rd year as a teacher in the Brandon school system, was hired in August to fill the spot vacated when former coach John Ubbing stepped down following the 2005-06 school year. The Blackhawks opened their Flint Metro League season against Fenton Aug. 28 at Goodrich Country Club.
‘They called me in early August about the position,? he said. ‘I thought it over and the schedule worked out. I have a boy playing high school football in Clarkston, and there weren’t any Friday meets.?
Thompson, who currently teaches physical education and health at Brandon Middle School, 609 S. Ortonville Road, Ortonville, said he also coached the Brandon golf team about nine or 10 years ago.
Last year, the Blackhawks won the Flint Metro League championship as well as a district championship. The Blackhawks are trying to repeat that feat, but Thompson acknowledges the team faces an obstacle due to the injury of returning golfer Josh Williams.
‘Not having him has cost us some strokes,? he said. ‘We’ve had some guys shoot well on the front end and bad on the back end, and vice versa. We need another guy or two to hit in the 70s.?
