Brandon Twp.- Want to learn about investing without any sales pitch or pressure?
The Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Services will present the free program ‘Investing Fundamentals? as part of Investor Education @ Your Library, from 10-11:30 a.m., Oct. 13, to be followed by an optional non-commercial counseling session. The library is located at 304 South St.
‘It’s our answer to the free lunch seminars, a tactic used by financial advisors, planners, etc. to bring people in and then promote their product,? says Peg Beckwith, investor education coordinator. ‘We have no agenda except to educate.?
The program will cover key investment terms; investing misconceptions and caveats; an overview of the financial markets and the major exchanges; the fundamentals of stocks, bonds and mutual funds; how to select a financial services provider; how to protect yourself from investment fraud; and the three components for building wealth.
‘It’s a very basic program,? explains Beckwith. ‘People aren’t very investment savvy, and truly, everyone is an investor these days. It’s their responsibility to fund their retirement. You put this weight on their shoulders and they haven’t been given an education.?
‘Now is the time to start, and you don’t need to start big,? she said. ‘Just start, even in difficult economic times… It’s the perfect opportunity to get objective advice.?
