State Superintendent, Mike Flanagan, is developing two ‘cabinet? advisory groups to help give him a more definitive sense of how and where we can improve our schools.
One group will consist only of students from a cross-section of grades and abilities in the hope of offering an unvarnished insight as to how we can help make their education more effective, valuable, and relevant.
District Superintendents throughout Michigan were asked to provide Flanagan with the name of one student whom would reflect a true representation of the school district. If chosen, this student would help provide insight during the cabinet discussions that are intended to be ‘relaxed, civil, positive and constructive.? Lake Orion Community Schools Superintendent, Marion Ginopolis, recommended high school senior, Rawley Van Fossen.
‘Rawley will candidly and respectfully articulate his viewpoint on many issues that our youth are facing today,? said Ginopolis. ? I can’t think of anyone better to represent our schools.?
On May 3, she was informed Rawley was selected from among hundreds of students around the state to be a member of the Superintendent of Public Instruction’s Student Advisory Group.
‘I was very excited when Mrs. Ginopolis gave me the news and thankful for the opportunities Lake Orion Community Schools has given me,? said VanFossen. ‘I believe Michigan is facing a lot of issues when it comes to restructuring the education system and I know as students we will be able to provide a different aspect in the education debate.?
The first meeting of the Student Advisory Group was in Lansing on May 17.
