Just one hurdle remains for Lake Orion’s girls golf team.
The squad has won the Oakland County title and last week won the state regional championship. On Friday and Saturday of this week, the Dragon ladies are competing for a state championship in Battle Creek.
The ladies won the regional title in very convincing fashion at Lapeer Country Club over 13 other teams. Lake Orion’s golf team is ranked number one in the state and obviously are the favorites this weekend at Forest Akers West Golf Course in Battle Creek.
Coach Monty Gallaher said the windy conditions at Lapeer challenged everyone and made it even more important to focus on each shot.
The ladies did just that and won by an astounding 17 shots better than second place Grand Blanc to give the Dragon girls the team’s first-ever regional title. The team shot 340 in the windy conditions.
Lauren Danielson and Megan Miller tied for third place with 84s. Sam Fox and Moyea Russel carded 86s. Torri Basso shot a 90. The Dragons top four scores were all within five shots of the best score by any individual in the tournament.
Coach Gallaher has said that his team’s strength is the overall balance of the team. In high school gold, each team has five players who compete and the top scores of four are tallied.
