While the Red Wings won’t be playing any time soon, the Clarkston varsity hockey team has already played four games this season. With 19 players returning, the Wolves should be a competitive force again this year.
The Wolves have won the OAA title the past two seasons and four of the last six years. In 2003 they competed in the State finals and last season, fell in the quarterfinals, as they lost in overtime to Marquette, who went on to win the State title.
‘We are more experienced and that should help in the playoffs,? said Coach Bryan Krygier. ‘We also need to use our size. Hitting creates turnovers which create opportunities.?
The Wolves have lost only five players from last season, but four of those now gone were All-State.
‘We still have a lot of power,? said Krygier.
Senior forwards Trevor Johns, Mike Fogg and Chris Degen tallied 109 points last year.
As with all hockey teams goaltending is a key. Last season CHS netminders combined for a 2.2 GAA.
‘We have two goalies returning (senior Michael Brach and junior Adam Richards) and have added (junior) Nick Cesario. It’s their job to prove who should be out there.?
Currently the Wolves are 4-0 (3-0).
