Vets enjoy luncheon, share stories

Sixty-five veterans and family members enjoyed lunch and shared stories at the 11th-annual Veterans’ Luncheon, Nov. 4, at Independence Township Senior Center.
George C. Thompson Jr. of Independence shared his experiences as a combat infantryman in South Pacific during World War II.
Thompson, who earned the Bronze Star for bravery in action, read a poem he wrote,
“We stand on the sands of time
By the waves of the water,
Waiting for that great ship
To carry us to our final destination.”
American Legion Post 377 presented the flag, gun salute and played taps. Lauren Chamberlane of Veteran’s Service Division of Oakland County was guest speaker.
Lourdes Senior Community sponsored the event, and senior center volunteers served the meal.
