Voter’s Guide for May 3, 2005 election: Goodrich Board of Education

Jeff Engleman, 41,
Residency: Atlas Township, 33 years
Occupation: Operations Manager at Barron Precision Instruments
Family: Wife Sheryl Engleman and two children, 7th and 11th grade, both are in Goodrich schools, my wife and myself are both Goodrich grads.
Education, experience, skills: Associates degree in Business, more than 23 years of business experience, dealing with budgets, people, governmental regulations. With children in school system, decisions affect everyone’s children, including your own.
Which issues do you most want to address, and how? The most important issues that face the Goodrich school system at this time are financial. After spending over 30 million on improvements and new schools they find themselves unable to spend their money wisely.
How will you balance representing constituents and working with other board members’You are put in office to represent your constituents’that is your job. Working with board members should not be an issue all board members should be working for their constituents.
School board meeting attendance:After I decided to run for school board I have attended five meetings to date but plan on attending as many as I can.

Carol Powers, 59,
Residency: Atlas Township resident for 59 years
Occupation: Retired school secretary from Goodrich Area Schools
Family: Husband Jack; son Jim, who graduated from Goodrich High School, and daughter-in-law Tonya; grandchildren Jayna and Molly, who will attend Goodrich schools
Education, experience, skills: Goodrich High School graduate, attended Flint Junior College. Secretary 20 years, Goodrich Schools. Active in Goodrich community organizations since 1968, hospital auxiliary, historical society, United Way block grant, Silver Fox program coordinator, Women’s Club, festivals.
Which issues do you most want to address, and how? The board is facing decisions concerning budget and need for long-range plans. Years of experience in the district and deep understanding of this community will allow me to bring different perspective to the board.
How will you balance representing constituents and working with board members? I will be open to community ideas and concerns and willing to be their voice to the board. I love this community, am comfortable sharing my opinion, and will always work to find a balance.
Number of school board meetings attended: I have read board minutes for more than 20 years and have been interested in school board activities since 1981. I have recently started attending more meetings since declaring my candidacy.

Shane Tiedeman, 46,
Residency: 11 years in Atlas Township
Occupation: Retired school administrator
Family: Married to Sandy for 21 years. Three children: Brittany, 16; Paige, 13; and Madison, 11, attend Goodrich Area Schools.
Education, experience, skills: Bachelor of Science, Michigan State University; Master of Public Administration, University of Michigan; 24 years working with schools’Dexter, National Center Community Education, Flint Schools, Mott Foundation; five years Board of Directors, Wheelock Memorial Hospital.
Which issues do you most want to address, and how? To continue to improve high quality of education services delivered to community of Goodrich Schools through listening to the community, students, and staff, and by giving guidance to the educational process.
How will you balance representing constituents and working with board members? As an incumbent I have the experience of listening to our constituents and expressing viewpoints to other board members.
School board meeting attendance: During the last four years I have attended at least two meetings every month. Since I have also served on three board committees I have attended many additional meetings.

Family: Married 28 years to Janice. One son, Ryan, who attended K-12 Goodrich schools, currently attends Central Michigan University
Education, experience, skills: Associate degree, business management, Mott Community College; bachelor degree, business, accounting major, University of Michigan-Flint; Master of Business Administration, Wayne State University. 10 years, Goodrich School Board. Certified, Michigan Association of School Boards.
Which issues do you most want to address if elected, and how will you do this?
Curriculum, finance, efforts to begin effective gifted-talented program; continue to monitor, work to assure overall curriculum is best possible. Important for board to monitor, ensure limited financial resources used to students? best advantage.
How will you balance the responsibility of representing constituents and working with board members?
Listen to both ‘sides? of issue, take feedback to meeting. If disagreement, sometimes use best rationale and public views, and agree to disagree. Majority rules. Board lives with final decision, respectfully handling district business.
Number of school board meetings previously attended in the district.
Don’t believe I’ve missed a meeting in the past two years; attended more than 95 percent of meetings in 10 years on board. Have traveled from Chicago to fulfil my responsibility to attend.
