Weber leads Goodrich quartet of grapplers to state meet

Goodrich’s wrestling team will be well-represented at The Palace of Auburn Hills Mar. 10-12.
Four Martians qualified for the individual state wrestling finals at The Place by placing in the top four at their Division 3 regional meet Saturday, Feb. 26.
Heading up that list is freshman Mark Weber, who took first place in the 103-lb. weight class by earning a 7-2 decision against Nick Quinones of Erie Mason in the division finals. Weber (43-2) handed Quinones his first loss of the season after 35 wins.
Also qualifying for the state meet are senior Jason Fischer, who finished second in the 119-lb. class; senior Garrett Higdon, who finished fourth in the 103-lb. class; and senior Kyle Fletcher, who finished fourth in the 189-lb. class.
Weber’s road to the division championship began when he pinned Flat Rock’s Jake Bonello in 13 seconds. He then defeated Dundee’s Garrett Stevens by a 5-0 decision before defeating Quinones in the finals.
Fischer (48-7) pinned Ida’s Chris Ott in 3:22 in his first match, and then pinned Erie Mason’s Brandon Griffin in 5:10 before dropping a 23-8 technical fall to Dundee’s Zac Donofrio in the division finals.
Higdon (45-10) earned a 7-0 decision against Onsted’s Tyler Sexton in his first-round match, then suffered a 4-2 defeat against New Boston Huron’s Andrew Novak. He rebounded to earn a 10-2 major decision against Blissfield’s Nate Hall, but lost a 4-3 decision to Lance Pitcel of Richmond in the third-place match.
Fletcher (41-14) earned a 7-2 decision against Grosse Ile’s Larry Bohl before losing a 13-4 major decision to Dundee’s Adam MacIver. He came back to pin Melvindale’s Jim McGucklin in 2:51 before being pinned by Yale’s Jon Vanderbossche in 4:42 in the third-place matchup.
