Now is the time of year when lots of folks ? particularly young ladies ? come down with a bad case of wedding fever and the Northeast Oakland Historical Museum in downtown Oxford is no exception.
From now through the end of June, the museum is featuring a display that includes approximately 12 stunning wedding gowns.
The oldest is a gown from 1883 coupled with a white taffeta cape from 1833.
The newest dress is from 2007.
‘I just like to see the variety of how the styles have changed from year to year and from generation to generation,? said museum volunteer Sue Bossardet. ‘I really like the old dresses.?
The display includes the dress that Leta Beemer wore on her wedding day.
She was married to Brace Beemer, who was the radio voice of the Lone Ranger from 1941-54 and lived in Oxford from 1942 until his death in 1965.
Leta’s dress is Bossardet’s favorite.
‘It’s a beautiful one,? she said.
Besides dresses, the display includes wedding invitations, photos, assorted jewelry, handkerchiefs, wedding bands and engagement rings, a vintage bride/groomer cake topper, cutting knife and server for wedding cake, gloves, a flower girl basket and wedding gifts.
Wedding invitations representing five generations of Bossardet’s family, from 1897 through 2006, are also part of the display.
The Northeast Oakland Historical Museum is located inside the old Oxford Savings Bank building at 1 N. Washington St., the northwest corner of Burdick St. and M-24.
Museum hours are 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Saturday and the first Sunday of the month.
Private tours are available.
