The first graders of Paint Creek Elementary had a chance to show off their knowledge of fairy tales and their singing voices simultaneously when on May 17 the tenth annual Three Piggy Opera took place for parents and faculty alike.
The classic tale was told to a tee but accentuated by catchy songs and charismatic characters, especially wolf Marvin Kay who marched around the stage looking for unwary pigs to eat. Prior to the wolf’s introduction, the audience learned of three piggies just starting off in the world and how they met three different material salesmen who had utter faith in their product.
The wolf put those claims to the test, however and the pigs narrowly escaped to the safety of the brick house, where the wolf soon learned how hot soup can be when he attempted to come down the chimney.
The kids laughed, smiled and genuinely enjoyed performing. For Kay, the best part was the Huff-and-Puff song, while piggy Saige Curtis preferred going in and out of the houses.
‘I liked singing the verse,? said farmer Emily Rush.
The play, put on by all 23 members of Marilyn Crandell’s first grade class, started when Crandell’s sone was a pig in the opera long ago. When she became a teacher, she wanted to repeat the experience for all the kids in her class.
‘It’s just a great experience,? she said. ‘They beg me ‘can we sing the songs again???
Judging from the humming audience members leaving the art room that day, the songs will likely be sung again.
