Brandon Twp.-At about 1 p.m., May 3, Brandon Fire Department along with Oxford, Hadley and Groveland responded to the 5000 block of Oakwood Road for a residential structure fire.
A firefighter from Brandon Fire Station 3, located across the street from the blaze was on duty and arrive first to provided aid to the homeownner a 60-year old woman who was on the ground in front of the home. According to the fire report, the woman had jumped from the second story window due to the smoke filled house. She suffered injuries to her leg and head along with smoke inhalation, and was transported to Ascension Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc then to Hurley Medical Center Flint.
One of the two dogs expired in the blaze.
The Oakland County Sheriff Office Fire investigators responded to the scene and the cause of the fire is still unknown.
“There is heavy fire damage to the garage and breezeway,” said Brandon Fire Chief David Kwapis. “The smoke was very heavy inside the home and there’s a good chance had the victim went back down the stairs to exit fire, she may not have made it.”
Kwapis said the Oakland County Sheriff Deputies responded to the fire and assisted firefighters.
“The deputies did a fantastic job on the scene,” he said. “The Mutual Aid provided by our neighboring fire departments along with our fire crews did everything possible to care for the patient and put out the fire.”
Brandon firefighters returned at 3:30 p.m.
