Board seeking input on superintendent

Goodrich – The Goodrich Board of Education will meet beginning at 4 p.m. May 24 to conduct second interviews with three candidates for school superintendent.
The board narrowed its search to four contenders last week: Janet Sifferman, current Hartland School District assistant superintendent; Kim Hart, current principal of Goodrich Oaktree Elementary; Michael Dodge, current principal of Saginaw Township’s Heritage High School; and Suzanne Palte, Dexter School District assistant superintendent. Of the four, Sifferman, Hart, and Dodge will return for second interviews, although none of the finalist candidates has yet been ruled out, said Goodrich Board of Education President Michael Thorp.Board members expressed a desire for experience in a small district, as well as a candidate who would remain in the position long-term.
‘I don’t want to go through this again in 10 years,? said Ken Rappuhn, board trustee. Candidates can offer no guarantee of longevity, pointed out Dr. Carl Hartman, Michigan Association of School Boards search consultant.
‘You folks have been spoiled and are very fortunate,? he said. ‘You folks have a lot to do with (a superintendent staying).?
Board members, who have sought the input of staff, parents, students, and residents of the Goodrich district, have received both negative and positive feedback regarding candidates, especially local candidate Hart.
‘You know what they say about familiarity,? said Thorp. ‘I think we have to be careful with that.?
The board is still seeking feedback regarding candidates, although anonymous remarks–which have been mostly negative–will not be considered, said Thorp. Feedback can be sent to board of education members via the school’s Web site. Go to http://www.goodrich.k12.mi.us/super/board/index.htm.
