Last Thursday, the boys and girls track team traveled to Holly to compete in the tri-meet with the Bronchos and the Lapeer West Panthers. It was the first league meet for the Oxford track team. The triangular meet was scored as if each school was competing against the other individually; however, the whole point of the tri is to save time, so Oxford runners where competing against both Holly and West athletes in the events. Here are the results:
Boys Track
The boys track team was victorious over Lapeer West with a score of 107-21, but lost by only three points to Holly 67-70. In the 110M and 300M Intermediate Hurdles, Junior Kam Mueller had a first place finish in both events. In the field events, Senior Vince Belistos took home first place honors with a 139-foot hurl. In the discus, and a 52-foot throw in the shot put. Head Coach Andrew McDonald was impressed with Belistos’s performance and contends that he is really starting to make strides as a thrower.
With a winning distance of 17?10?, Junior Sergio Schlak placed first in the long jump. Senior German Guerrero won three events on Thursday, and he is beginning to show that the other teams in Oakland County and the FML that he is a force that cannot be overlooked. Guerrero won the 400M dash, the 800M run, and as a member of the four-man 3200 Relay team with Juniors Adam Richmond and Todd Davidson, and Senior Kenny White.
Adam Richmond also swept his events in the 3200M and 1600M runs. Sophomore sprinter Nick Collier took first in the 100M dash. ‘Nick is a young sprinter that is starting to realize his potential,? said McDonald, ‘this was a great win for him.? The boy’s overall record is 2-2, 1-1 in the FML.
Girls Track
The girl’s team emerged victorious in the tri-meet over both Holly (80-56) and Lapeer West (87-48).
It was a great individual and team effort overall. Oxford’s relay teams dominated the Panthers and the Bronchos. The 3200M-relay team consisting of Sophomores Elizabeth Hazelwood, Heather Nester, and Abby Stewart with Junior Ashley Seeling placed first in the meet.
The 800M-relay team with sophomores Tiara Tatarczuk and Ashlee Eller, freshman Jacqui Sylva, and senior Deann Kujawa also finished first. Ashley Seeling, Freshman Katelyn McCormick, Senior Carly Gailey, and Abby Stewart had a first place finish in the 1600M-relay. Ashley Seeling took home another first place honor in the 800M run.
Coach McDonald is pleased to see that Ashley’s hard work in practice is beginning to show during the meets. Sprinters Jacqui Sylva (100M-dash) and Deann Kujawa (200M-dash) both finished first over the Panthers and the Bronchos.
Senior thrower Kacey Cookingham placed first in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 11 inches. ‘Kacey’s hard work and dedication makes her the thrower to beat in the FML,? stated McDonald. The girls record improves to 3-1 overall, and 2-0 in the Flint Metro League.
Oxford will host Ortonville-Brandon for their first home meet on Wednesday, April 27, and then travel to Rochester to compete on Friday, April 29.
