‘Christmas? spirit helps needy seniors

About 95 volunteers spent their April 30 bringing a little ‘Christmas? to three low-income senior citizen families in Independence Township.
The first Clarkston-area ‘Christmas in Action? project brought repairs and beautification to homes on Dixie Highway, Summerhill Drive and Drayton Road.
‘We thought we would only have one home to do, and we ended up with three,? said organizer Diane Midgely. ‘It went better than expected.?
Thanks to business sponsors, materials were donated to help accomplish needed repairs. Volunteers brought both skilled and unskilled labor, and each site saw evidence of new paint, carpentry, plumbing and landscaping.
Firefighters from the Independence Township Fire Department volunteered their time to install donated smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
The physical improvements were accompanied by new friendships and a spirit of teamwork.
‘The positive energy that was generated among the volunteers was powerful,? Midgely said.
‘There are seniors who need assistance,? she said, promising another Christmas in Action campaign in April 2006.
