OHS honors Viers, Sweeney with awards

The Orion Historical Society honored two award recipients at its annual meeting on May 20.
Chuck Viers, formerly of Lake Orion, was honored with the Volunteer Recognition Award, for his dedication above and beyond expectations in furthering the OHS? goals.
Viers was unable to attend the event, as he and his wife Ginny recently relocated to Georgia.
The Orion Legacy Award was given to Mike Sweeney, for his significant contributions to the preservation of Orion’s legacy through his ongoing research of local Orion families? history, and his passion for honoring the past by preserving its memories.
The OHS? annual meeting was held at the Orion Senior Center and historic Union Church, and included a presentation by Dick Stephen, who shared stories from his days as a marine mail carrier on Lake Orion.
An announcement was made at the meeting by Maura Johnson of Mannik & Smith Group, Inc., that the Lake Orion Historic District National Register nomination was given approval by the State Historic Preservation Review Board in Lansing.
She reported that their recommendation to list the district on the National Register of Historic Places will be forwarded to the National Park Service/Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C.
Official approval should arrive within 45 days.
After the meeting, attendees were treated to a tour and discussion of Union Church’s architectural features, by project manager Leslie Pielack and Ron Campbell of THA Architects.
The OHS also elected a new board of directors for May 2006-April 2007. Those elected to serve were: Patti Abate, John Garlicki, Showey Howey, Lisa Sokol, Mike Sweeney, and Alice Young.
