Wint Funeral Home in Clarkston offers a line of unique items called Thumbies which are created from the fingerprints of a loved one.
The keepsakes? creator, Meadow Hill, takes an ink fingerprint and turns it into a three-dimensional replica of the print in sterling silver or 14k yellow or white gold.
The pieces are designed as charms that can be worn on chains or bracelets, mounted on objects such as a pocket knife or money clip, or embedded in Lucite for use as a key ring. The fingerprints can also be laid into a rimmed heart or remembrance ring.
‘These keepsakes really do help,? said Tim Currier, Funeral Director at the Lewis E. Wint & Son Funeral Home, Clarkston. ‘You can feel the ridges across the surface, and that touch somehow connects you to the memory of someone who is no longer with you.?
Thumbies work for other kinds of separation too ? a child going away to college, a son or daughter deploying overseas, a parent retiring to a warmer climate, a grandparent moving into a nursing facility, even for a pet, Currier said.
