Swimmers excel at county meet

The Clarkston Girls Swim and Dive team finished in eighth place overall out of 33 teams at the Oakland County Swimming and Diving Meet, Oct. 1-2, Waterford Mott High School.
All the girls had a great day.
The team saw Freshman Sami Stelpflug honored as Oakland County Champion in the 200 Individual Medley and take second in the 100 Breaststroke. Both races established two varsity records for Clarkston’s swim program.
Freshman Kathryn Culver swam to a 3rd place finish in the 100 Freestyle and took 5th place honors in the 50 Freestyle.
The all Freshman Medley Relay team, made up of Stelpflug, Culver, Monica Gorgas and Natalie Vela finished 7th. Sophomore Taylor Tekiele teamed up with Culver, Gorgas and Stelpflug for a 7th place finish in the 400 Freestyle Relay.
This was a qualifying meet and the following girls also qualified in individual events: Natalie Vela (100 Fly) and Monica Gorgas (200 IM & 100 Breast), and Divers Jenny Godlew, Jessica Bacher and Alyssa Spytman.
Coach Kenwyn Chock was very pleased with her team’s performance.
“We were a very young team at this meet,” she said. “With the performances put in, the other teams will definitely take notice and put Clarkston back in their radar.”
The team heads to Lake Orion on Thursday. They compete at 6:30 p.m.
