Music for friends in need

Independence Elementary first-graders collected 155 DVDs and $361 during their “Ty’d with Love” benefit concert on Feb. 10.
The students, together with first-graders from Springfield Plains Elementary, are collecting donations for the Children’s Hospital for their Academic Service Learning project.
They put the DVDs in groups of ten and counted them along with the cash donations.
Then, they wrote thank you notes to their parents for coming to the show and for the donations.
So far the students have raised $4,600 for the ASL project and are working with a social worker at the hospital to find out the greatest needs.
“We will generate a list,” said Anne Duffy, Independence Elementary, first grade teacher. “The students will decide and vote on items from the list that they would like to purchase and donate to the hospital.”
As part of the ASL project the Independence Elementary students write to their penpals at Springfield Plains, which is holding the next benefit concert.
