Vets get awards, new commander

Fewer than 10 percent of all VFW Posts are named an all-state post, but North Oakland VFW Post 334 has achieved that recognition for the third year in a row.
Post 334 received all-state for their 2009/10 and 2010/11 years and recognized as an all-state post against for the 2011/12 fiscal year at VFW State Convention held recently in Troy. Commander Ernie Baker was named to the all-state commander’s team and received a white cap, which was presented at the state convention on June 8. The award was presented to Baker by Jack Pray, commander of the VFW Department of Michigan.
VFW post 334 received a number of awards at the state convention. The post sold $21,159.15 of buddy poppies, more than any other VFW post in Michigan. James Hubbard, senior vice commander of the post, sold $3,569.69 worth of buddy poppies, making him the top seller in the state.
A national recognition award was presented to him at the convention.
Post 334 received additional awards and recognitions including the VFW Michigan Department’s award for its americanism program. Additional recognitions include certificates for support of cancer research, hospital program, community service, gold star mother’s program as well as for outstanding participation in youth activities which included the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Young Marines.
North Oakland VFW Post 334 meets the second Thursday of every month at the American Legion VFW Hall on East Drahner Road in Oxford at 7:30 p.m. The post started in 1984 and members reside in Oxford, Lake Orion, Bloomfield Hills, Leonard, Metamora and Rochester Hills.
