Power was knocked out to portions of Lake Orion on Monday following a three-car accident on M-24 and Elizabeth Street in the village of Lake Orion.
According to police Chief Jerry Narsh, the accident happened about noon. A south bound 2003 Chevrolet Malibu driven by an 86-year-old woman from Oxford Township was southbound on M24 in the left turn lane to turn onto eastbound Elizabeth St.
The preliminary investigation showed the woman drove into the northbound lanes of M-24, eastbound against the red light into the path of a northbound vehicle. The northbound vehicle was a 2007 Ford Econoline van being driven by a 61-year-old Clarkston man.
The Malibu was struck broadside on the passenger side causing injuries to the 86-year-old who was transported to an area hospital by Star ambulance and is hospitalized in serious condition.
The Ford van had a green light and was traveling at or near the posted speed limit of 40 MPH.
After the initial impact with the van, the Chevy Malibu then struck a 2013 Ford Escape that was west bound on Elizabeth St. stopped for the red light at M24. That vehicle was driven by a 70-year-old woman from West Bloomfield.
Seat belts were worn by all drivers and all vehicles were occupied by the drivers only.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The drivers of the Ford van and the Ford Escape were not injured. The Ford Escape had only minor damage and was able to be driven from the scene.
Both the Malibu and the Ford van came to final rest onto the north east side of the intersection after striking and severing a guide wire to a DTE power pole. The broken guide wire made contact with high voltage wires, knocking out power to a small area around the crash site.
A DTE repair team arrived and restored power to the area by 3:15 pm.
