Where’s the fire?

Goodrich-On Monday afternoon, Atlas Township Fire Chief Fred Forys was on a test drive of some used firefighting equipment.
‘I finally have a vehicle to take out to a fire,? said Forys,
Forys? one horse power ride to a fire is the project of Bill Rausch, village resident and collector of antique fire equipment, who found the century old fire chief buggy in a barn near the intersection of Hadley and Seymour Lake Road in Brandon Township.
‘I saw the old buggy just sitting out there rusting ‘I just could not stand to see the old thing out there,? he said. ‘So I purchased it last year and had it restored to as close as we could determine.?
The buggy turned out to be an authentic McLaughlin Carriage, which was built in 1910 at the Oshawa, Ontario plant. According to the history of McLaughlin Company was producing about 25,000 carriages per year in 1910 one of the largest in North America.
The McLaughllin company also has close ties to the Flint area when they expanded from the buggy business and built automobiles in Canada. By 1908 the company purchased engines from the Buick Motor Car Company of Michigan.

The only flames were under hotdogs cooking on the grill Sunday, but all 34 Springfield Township firefighters were on duty while the department showed off renovations at Station No. 2.
Families enjoyed free food, cold drinks, desserts, and also got a look at the station’s new facilities and shiny red trucks during the open house.
Renovations on the firehouse, located on Dixie Highway near Rattalee Lake Road, began about a year ago. The project’s budget totaled about $1.1 million.
In addition to other expansions, two additional bays were added for a total of five.
‘A lot of times the firefighters come back from a call and they’re half-froze and the hoses are froze,? he said. ‘The serviceability of the bays makes things a lot easier.?
A much-needed exhaust removal system was also installed in the bay.
‘The renovations are good for our firefighter’s egos,? Oaks said. ‘It shows them the township and the community cares about them.?
The building is also used as a polling place for voters in Precinct No. 2.
‘It was otherwise known as ‘the hardship post,?? said Clerk Nancy Strole. ‘But those who worked here during the January Presidential Primary were just thrilled.?
The township, she said, got a lot for its budget dollars.
‘The builder and the architect did a really nice job,? she said. ‘We got a lot for our money’this is a first-class facility and our firefighters deserve it.?
