The Oxford-Avondale United (OAU) varsity hockey team beat Fenton-Linden 1-0 after a hard fought game Feb. 20 at the Troy Sports Arena.
‘It was a good up-and-down game between two well-matched opponents,? said OAU Head Coach Dan Henzie.
The first period was scoreless, so OAU entered the second period hoping to put one in the back of the net. With the puck deep in the Fenton-Linden Griffins?’offensive zone, a clearing attempt was stopped and dumped back in by OAU’s Brent Bouck.? The Griffins tried to move out, but OAU’s defenseman Dyrden Calcaterra bumped the puck to Tyler Majewski, who stickhandled deftly through the low zone and made a beautiful shot over the Griffins? goalie.
The Griffins came out strong in the third period, but OAU held fast.? With their goalie pulled near the 2-minute mark, the Griffins went 6-on?-5, and all the pressure was in OAU’s zone. OAU’s goalie, R.J. Petrusev, who had played spectacularly all night, made some terrific saves to keep the Fenton-Linden Griffins’off the’scoreboard.?
‘Our boys played three complete periods tonight,? Henzie said. ‘They stayed composed, focused on defense, moved the puck and worked together to the buzzer.?
Petrusev recorded his first shutout of the season. ‘R.J. played great and the boys supported him’well in the D-zone,? Henzie said.
The team’s record is now 6-15-3. ‘Too bad the season is nearly over as we are starting to play’together as a team,? Hezie said.
OAU will play New Boston Huron Saturday at 8 p.m. at Troy Sports Center.?
‘This should be another good match-up for OAU, and the team hopes to finish the regular season with a win,? Henzie noted.
