Whether you are looking to try something a little exotic, or just want a familiar favorite, the Poppyseed Deli and Coffee in downtown Lake Orion is ready to fill your order.
Recently opened at 27 W. Flint Street, in the former Blue Note Cafe location, Poppyseed is the creation of Clarkston entrepreneur Angie Davis, who formerly worked as the food services director for K-12 at Mount Clemens Schools. Davis worked there for nearly four years before she decided she wanted to open her own business.
“I always wanted by own business, deli style, for people to choose healthier food,” said Davis.
Davis choose the Lake Orion location after briefly considering Waterford for her business.
“I grew up in Ortonville, so I always knew about Lake Orion,” she said. “I got in contact with Becky Goodman (Downtown Lake Orion Coordinator), and she told me about this building. I loved it.”
All of the sandwich bread at Poppyseed Deli is baked fresh, and comes in a wide variety: White, Savory Herbed Wheat, European Grain Loaf, French Bread, Herbed Parmesan Foccacia Bread, Italian Roll and Manhattan Rye.
The deli offers “create your own” sandwiches with choices like turkey, ham, roast beef, corn beef, herbed chicken breast, to name a few; and it also has specialty sandwiches like “Swiss Pesto Chicken,” “Antipasto Specialty,” “The Dagwood,” and Poppyseed Turkey Deluxe.”
Poppyseed has Hot Panini specialities, which are hot grilled sandwiches. There are also wrapped sandwiches, fresh salads, fresh fruit, soup and delectable baked goods to choose from.
Poppyseed opens at 6 a.m. for early morning commuters who need their coffee fix. The restaurant has a lengthy selection of speciality and fresh brewed coffee drinks that won’t break your budget. Some of the Poppyseed Favorites include: Bavarian Chocolate Mint, Mocha Nut Swirl, Raspberry Avalanche, and Turtle Mocha, to name a few.
Davis said since they opened business has been steady.
“It’s a diverse crowd and this area was needing something like this,” she said. “The village is so cute. I’m working full shifts until I can get staff trained.”
Davis plans to begin offering party trays soon and sometime in the next year to offer off-site catering services.
“Everyone’s very excited we’re here and they like the new look of the building,” she said.
“We’ve gotten a lot of support from the area businesses,” added Davis, who plans to join the Orion Area Chamber of Commerce.
Poppyseed Deli and Coffee is open 6 a.m.-10 p.m., Mon.-Thurs.; 6 a.m.-12 a.m., Fri.; 7 a.m.-12 a.m, Sat.; and 9 a.m.-3 p.m., Sun. The phone number is 693-6041.
