Dear Editor,
I am no less amazed that some seem to think the all day kindergarten program has anything to do with increasing our children’s academic abilities.
The real reason the Lake Orion school district pushed the all day kindergarten program ‘down our throat? is to preserve their state funding. The state threatened (and rightfully so) to reduce funding for students attending a part-time program. The parents in favor of the all day program are more interested in free daycare than the academic benefits to their children.
Those of us who prefer to send our children to a part-time program are left with no options. It will cost my family at least an extra $250 per month over and above what we already pay in taxes to send our child to a private, part-time kindergarten program next year.
I am extremely disappointed in the school board for making this decision without even having the decency to inform the district parents that by approving the full-time program, there would no longer be any part-time kindergarten offered in the entire district.
