The owner of a Baldwin Road establishment was unsuspectingly caught up in a fraud case last week, but his money eventually made it to the right place.
According to an Oakland County Sheriff’s Department report, the owner of Great Lakes Carryout had agreed to purchase over $20,000 in computer and register equipment from Hospitality Management Systems (HMS).
The businessman was dealing with a contractor hired by HMS and had written one check that had gotten through to the company with no problems.
His second check, for $4,000, never made it to HMS, however, as the contractor had been fired.
The 44-year-old contractor, instead, attempted to place the money into his personal account.
He was caught last Tuesday, when he tried to deposit the money in a Macomb County bank. He was cited for fraud.
