Independence Twp. — Area veterans may not walk with a cane. However, if the day arrives when they need the services of a cane a local group will lend a hand.
Carving cane heads for veterans is just one a several projects the Clarkston Woodcarvers whittle away at during the year. From 10 a.m.-noon, each Friday the Independence Township Senior Community Center, 6000 Clarkston Road, Clarkston, will host local wood carvers. Learn, observe and work on projects. Experienced carvers, novices and beginners welcome. Cost is $1 for members of the Senior Center or $2 for non-members.
Most of the group is associated with Metro Carvers of Michigan of greater Detroit. The group is part of the Michigan Wood Carvers Association, who to date have created more than 3,000 canes for veterans.
Area carvers or those that would like to explore the hobby are invited, said Jerry Hogan, a Brandon Township resident.
“It’s a time of carving, learning and enjoying the company of others interested in the hobby,” he said. “Whether your own project or working in a group there’s plenty of room for creativity, “ he said. “There’s a lot to be learned from other people’s approach and observing their technique.”
